At the LVMH watch summit in Dubai, Bulgari unveiled a fresh take on the Octo Finissimo Automatic. Originally launched in 2017 with a sleek titanium case and matching integrated bracelet, this watch wowed with its bold, unique design. Plus, its movement—the caliber BVL 138 Finissimo—held the title of the world’s thinnest self-winding movement back then, measuring a mere 2.23 mm thick.
This feat was made possible thanks to the movement’s generous 36.60 mm diameter and a clever micro-rotor design. While not the absolute thinnest automatic ever—Piaget’s caliber 12P matched its 2.23 mm thickness, and the vintage Lasalle caliber 2000 was even slimmer at 2.08 mm—the latter was too delicate to stick around (it could break just by being taken out of the case!). The AP caliber 2120, at 2.45 mm, still holds the crown for the thinnest full-rotor automatic. Though the BVL 138 Finissimo has since been outpaced by Bulgari’s own Octo Finissimo Tourbillon (a mere 1.95 mm thick), it proudly remains the world’s thinnest time-only automatic movement.
